A Unified Categorical Theory of Social Systems
Classical and contemporary sociology has produced a remarkable diversity of theories. Functionalism, conflict theory, interpretive sociology, rational choice, critical theory, network analysis, and institutionalism have each illuminated important dimensions of social life. Yet this richness has come at a cost. To unify the many representations used throughout the book—dynamic equations, stochastic processes, variational principles—the monograph introduces a categorical formulation.
